Apart from the previously mentione Tutti Frutti Guti Backheely this was the best goal of last week.
Sky Sports lavished in it’s beauty. The speed and control from Nani, the speed and sheer determination from Rooney. Jamie Reknapp, known for neither of these things in his career, spouted mockney platitudes about Rooney being ‘the best in the world’ and ‘a one man team’ (which, of course, this goal absolutely proves he isn’t), his trousers getting ever tighter as he tried to work out a way to bring his dad into the conversation.
Sat next to him though, was a man who did possess these attributes during his career. Multi European Cup winning Ruud Gullit pronounced that yes, it was a superb goal; Rooney’s drive made a stunningly sharp counter attack all the more incisive. But he also pointed out Denilson not watching his man, and drifting in towards Nani and forgettng that he’d leave a hole for Rooney to burst into.
Redknapp, of course hadn’t noticed this. But he couldn’t let Ruud have the last word, so reiterated the brilliance of Rooney’s run. Ruud just gave the ‘why do I work with these amateurs?’ look, last seen when he played in defence with Michael Duberry.
