OCD & Apple

I bought an Ipod the other week. One of those 120 gig ones, forsaking the ever sexy ‘Touch’ because of it’s capacity-to-wealth proportion, and a poor chap like me would fill 8 gig in no time at all. I’ve got a PSP as well, and that (if I bought an 8 gig memory card) would perform most of the tasks I would want the Touch to do.

Unfortunately, I have now developed a severe case of obsessive compulsive disorder, and it’s all Apple’s fault.

Once I started adding music from my legal (of course) collection, I found that iTunes would add the cover for me. However, I then found that having one missing cover was like having one tiny dent in your car’s wing. It wouldn’t stop nagging you until you sorted it out. You might remember the episode of Father Ted where Ted tries to hammer out that small imperfection, and ends up with a vehicle consisting solely of dent. This is what iTunes has done to me.

Is it the right cover? Is that the best they can manage? Is there a version I don’t know about yet that has a superior cover? I can’t stop now. I am literally addicted. Adding new CDs is a task requiring cunning and patience, two things that I am seriously lacking.

The other thing about iTunes is that when you add a compilation you’ve found on a (legal download site such as the iTunes store - Ed) it may or may not recognise that it is a compilation of songs by different artists. So, when you Cover Flow (TM) you find the same album cover showing up time and time again, until you put it right. If this happens I get all light headed, and have heart palpitations.

My iPod, while awesome, is like a slightly misbehaving child. Usually it’s OK, just being good and surprising and lovely, but sometimes you just want to smack it one for doing something unbelievably naughty just to wind you up.
